Visit and Enjoy St Johns, SE8
St Johns is located in the south east part of London, within the London Borough of Lewisham and just bordering the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Its name comes from the parish church St John, Deptford built in 1855 as part of the Deptford New Town. There are still some historical buildings left from the old settlement, such as the Stone House Italianate mansion built in the late 18th century. It is quite famous for the 1957 Lewisham railway crash which saw 90 victims and 176 injured.
St Johns started as a small town with barely any population, but that changed once the Docklands Light Railway was introduced and house prices in the area jumped four times as many wealthy and well-off folk came in from Canary Wharf. The development of the area continues to this day, which can be seen with the recent expansion of Brockley’s Farmers’ Market. The area contains a couple of Conservation Areas: the Brookmill Road Conservation Area and the St John’s Conservation Area, covering the region all the way to Lewisham Way.
