Have a Fun Time in Charlton, SE7
Charlton is located in the east part of London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and between the areas of Greenwich and Woolwich. The first records of Charlton go all the way back to 1086 in the Domesday Book and through most of its history it has been an ancient parish in the Kent county. Its real development began with the industrialisation of the area during the Victorian era and it eventually grew to be a metropolitan district of London in 1855.
Charlton House was the centre of the estates in the area, but with the Maryon-Wilson family’s wilt they became increasingly unused and once the family was no more, all the open spaces were turned into public parks, Maryon Park being the more famous one. Charlton House itself became a community centre and a library.
Charlton was formerly famous for being a great site for mineral extraction, but the only place that now still exists (mostly as a remnant of those times) is Gilbert’s Pit. The other famous chalk pit is long gone, and in its stead today stands The Valley stadium, home to the Charlton Athletic FC.
